Charlotte Scott

Mafisa

Big Idea:

Mafisa creates healthy rangelands and improved livelihoods for pastoralists in Zambia. They revive the forgotten local tradition of lending cattle and regenerative grazing practices. A few years later, Mafisa aggregates the cattle and sells fat, healthy cows to big buyers and shares the profits with the pastoralists.

Charlotte has worked on improving livelihoods for very poor Zambian communities for many years. She founded ZayoHub a few years ago, focusing on Zambia’s most impoverished and climate-impacted region, and Mafisa grew out of that work. She loves Zambia’s environment and rural spaces, and led the Communities portfolio on the Zambia Wildlife Authority board. She studied social and structural barriers to combat chronic poverty for her PhD too.
