Herman Wanningen

World Fish Migration Foundation

Big Idea:

Dams are a huge threat to biodiversity -- a literal barrier to fish migration-- and yet there are thousands of old and obsolete dams still standing. Herman founded World Fish Migration Foundation and the Dam Removal Europe movement to remove dams and protect fish populations in free-flowing rivers worldwide. They identify obsolete dams, advocate for removal and catalyze funding to get it going, and then publicize the results to generate momentum.

Herman is an aquatic ecologist and entrepreneur with 20 years of experience in fish migration and water management. Herman is recognized for starting “World Fish Migration Day”, co-authoring 3 books, organizing international conferences and developing action networks.
