Jagdeesh Rao Puppala

Foundation for Ecological Security

Big Idea:

Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) restores damaged “commons” in rural India. They help communities secure land rights, then restore and manage the land they use in common. FES has brought 4.3 million acres into good commons management: beyond conservation, they see it as a way to improve both governance and livelihoods.

Jagdeesh has advised India’s Planning Commission on the role of commons. His work has been recognized with the Times of India Social Impact award, Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom Award on Commons, UN’s Land for Life award, and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. He holds degrees in Agricultural Sciences, Rural Management and Forestry.
