Blue Ocean Barns

Big Idea:

Cow’s burps contribute more to climate change than cars. Blue Ocean Barns’ animal feed stops those burps by adding a little red seaweed to the cow’s diet - only a few handfuls of their product reduces methane emissions from cows by over 75%. They’re building markets and incentives to get this product into the hands of farmers (and the mouths of cows!).

Joan was a Senior Partner at Accenture for 20 years and head of an Atlanta girls’ school for 12. Stanford’s School of Earth hosted her as a visiting scholar to explore the intersection of livestock agriculture, seaweed cultivation and climate. She grew up in rural Iowa where her grandfather raised soybeans and beef cattle on the family farm.
