Why we invest

Poor coastal communities depend on fisheries for their food and livelihood. In Madagascar, Blue Ventures uses small, short-term fishery closures to show coastal communities how management can improve catch and increase incomes. They persuade communities to close small fishing areas for a short time, then use the (often spectacular) increased catch to motivate the community to establish much bigger locally-managed marine areas. Building on what they learned, now they’re scaling that solution, via partners, to communities with the aim to create marine networks large enough to make a difference in reef conservation.
