Shamiri's school-based, group intervention is delivered by recent high school graduates ("fellows"). Fellows deliver a weekly one-hour class focused on gratitude and growth mindset to groups of fifteen students. All students participate and complete take-home assignments in between. Supervisors oversee fellows, and the program is structured to ensure kids with serious mental health problems get professional help.
The Shamiri model is integrated into public high school curriculum.
There is a small, but growing movement to prove and promote lay psychotherapy as a mental health solution for Africa. Their results are impressive: this intervention reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety by 38% and 45%, respectively even after a 7-month follow-up. The current cost is $7/student and could be much lower if delivered by the school system itself—it's realistic to imagine a cost less than 3% of the current government spend on high schoolers. We think it's worth going all-out to make it happen.
