Get women out of depression.
StrongMinds trains lay people to deliver group therapy for depression. The patients are identified with simple screening tools, and the providers are recruited from local communities. The content is based on cognitive behavioral therapy principles and is delivered through six one-hour weekly sessions.
Every African has access to StrongMinds’ group talk therapy for free, subsidized by national health services.
Lay psychotherapy represents a revolution in mental health care on a continent with very few mental health professionals. 75% of StrongMinds’ clients get out of depression and stay out for at least a year, at a cost of $17—and they believe they can get it cheaper. They made big strides to embed their model in existing government health systems to unlock their path to scale.
