Well-fed school kids
Food for Education (F4E) has devised an efficient “hub-and-spoke” kitchen model to source, prepare, and distribute healthy school meals in bulk. Kids pay onsite for their lunches using a prepaid “Tap2Eat” wrist device. Government subsidies get the price down to what parents can afford.
Food businesses—small, medium, and large—prepare and deliver school lunches to all kids, supported by government subsidy.
School feeding is one of the most cost-effective education interventions in Africa. What’s held it back is cost. F4E’s laser focus on cost targets, black-belt logistics, and successful advocacy for a government subsidy has made it affordable. The model works in urban/peri-urban settings, and they’re close to a rural model. They feed >500k kids/day on their own; more importantly they’ve become the leader in school feeding. They’re getting requests from other African governments and—most important—they have a real opportunity to drive a school lunch industry that can reach all kids.
